Themba Pieterse grew up in the capital region. Graduating from Albany High School in 2020. After graduating he attended McGill University’s Schulich School of Music. He then transferred to the Manhattan School of Music where he will start this fall under the tutelage of New York Philharmonic trumpeter, Ethan Bensdorf. During high school Themba played with the Empire State Youth Orchestra’s Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra. In 2019 he was accepted to play in NYSSMA Allstate and preformed in Rochester at the Eastman School of Music. During the Covid-19 Pandemic Themba preformed nightly on his roof for his neighbors in Albany. He played songs of hope such as “We Shall Overcome” and “What a Wonderful World.” It provided a sense of community in a time when it was needed most.
