The Fantastick Reviews!

“I would be hard-pressed to think of a better sign of the turning of the seasons than when the proverbial curtain comes down on September 15th and we theater lovers have to wait many a long month for the Mac-Haydn to return” says Lodro Rinzler for Trixie’s List

“The two fathers, who are the comedic heart of the show, provide much of the production’s levity. I would argue that Columbia County could support a show just about two men singing about how much they love their gardens, if those two men were portrayed by Gabe Belyeu and Jeffrey Konowitch.”

“A special treat for long-time patrons of the Mac-Haydn was the on-stage musical accompaniment by Eric Shorey on piano and Kathryn Sloat on harp, providing an immersive and whimsical air to every moment on stage. Both are truly exceptional talents.”

Something Not So Rotten… Read the EGGtraordinary Reviews!

“The Mac-Haydn Theatre cooks up a perfect theatrical experience with Something Rotten!” says Bill Kellert Nippertown

“John Saunders’ direction plays his performers like a fine tuned instrument.”

“Emma Cummings has designed a set that replicates a Renaissance stage which choreographer Mandy Modic makes the most of, with performers leaping up and down, several full company tap sequences that Busby Berkeley would be envious of.”

“Bethany Marx has assembled one of the finest costume designs seen at The Mac all season.”

“I would gladly see it again. Especially this edition. It is just plain wonderful.” says Peter Bergman for Berkshire Edge

“Nick’s wife Beatrice is played with style, grace, and hilarious intent by Madison Stratton, who makes the most of her two songs and her wonderful comic scenes as she proves herself worthy of her marriage”

“This is a show I intend to see again before it completes its three-week run.”

“Milords and ladies: get thyself over to Chatham. N.Y. for an undeniably riotous, rollicking evening of song, dance, and hilarity” says Jeannie Woods for Berkshire on Stage

“This entertaining Elizabethan pastiche could easily sink under its own weight, the jokes and parodies come so fast and furious. But Director Saunders has done a fabulous job of casting and staging a big, big show in the intimate theatre space.”

“Andrew Burton Kelly is amiable and passionate as the older brother, Nick Bottom. He’s an extremely fine singer and terrific actor who is indefatigably entertaining.”

“Stratton is a spectacular performer—her powerful and beautiful voice and charismatic rendition of the wife who disguises herself as a man to keep the household afloat is truly memorable.”

“SOMETHING ROTTEN is dazzlingly entertaining. No need to wait for the big song and dance showstopper at the end—this show is chock full of huge dance numbers from the get-go.”

“A tremendous shout out goes to costume designer Bethany Marx. SOMETHING ROTTEN must have over 100 costumes and the valiant 22-member cast donned one after another with remarkable aplomb.”

Something Costumes

BRINGING THE RENAISSANCE TO THE MAC

Something Rotten costume designer Bethany Marx gives us a behind the scenes look as she pulls from the extenssive fabric collection at our local costume annex to transport us right into the 1600’s and bring this Rotten spectacle to life!

Every show takes on its own life when it comes to costumes. Some shows are pulled mainly from our stock, and other shows, like Something Rotten become a puzzle of stock items we own, rental items we get from other theatres, and new builds, meaning we build the costumes from scratch ourselves. Bethany works with her team to find the best solutions for each character and each moment in the show. Just by seeing how long it takes to work through our fabrics, you can imagine how much work it is to put together an entire production!

All Shook Up by the Reviews!

Bill Kellert states “it is the music, 24 Presley hits and dancing that makes this show so very worthwhile. It’s fun, engaging and nostalgic without ever feeling dated or passe. Not an easy feat to accomplish, and this cast and crew do it without ever breaking a sweat.”Nippertown

“Spencer Stanley is superb as Chad the roustabout, putting his own spin on the Presley classics including “Jailhouse Rock,” “Roustabout,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” and the iconic “Burning Love.” Stanley never tries to imitate The King, though he does have Presley’s swiveling hip movements down to an art form.”

“The most spectacular parts of the show are the chorus numbers, magnificently re-imagined vocals of classic hits. “Can’t Help Falling In Love” sends chills down your spine with the combination of choreography, lighting and vocals.”

“If I am so glad I saw the show. I suspect you will feel the same when you see it, and I urge you to hasten to The Mac-Haydn in Chatham, New York.” says Peter Bergman for Berkshire Edge

“The songs from the Presley can work wonderfully in this peculiar play, literally shaking up the story and rattling the characters. It is all obvious under the fine direction of David Alpert and the expert choreography of Andrew Turteltaub.”

“The outstanding cast of the Mac-Haydn Theatre shakes their hips, sings their hearts out and absolutely dazzles in All Shook Up” says Paula Kaplan Reiss for Berkshire on Stage

“Kelley, as Sylvia, a role she has played before, often steals the stage whenever she appears. She is strong, wise, funny and has a voice that fills the theater. We all fall in love with her. She is the heart of the show.”

“Choreography by Andrew Turteltaub is top-notch on a relatively small thrust stage. A special shout-out to ensemble member, Tanner Kirol. A trained ballet dancer, his dancing draws attention in every group number.”

“I didn’t need to see Elvis to fall in love with this production of All Shook Up. I just couldn’t help it. Thank you very much.”

Over The Moon Reviews for RENT!
“It’s the best show I’ve seen in years. So much so that I recommend seeing it twice.” says Lodro Rinzler for Trixie’s List

“Andrew Burton Kelley (who was incredible in Xanadu) plays Mark, our point-of-view character who hides behind his camera, documenting the lives of his found family. Good lord this man is talented. It’s worth going just to see him move through the emotional arcs of the show.”

“Our Mimi is new to the MacHaydn and boy, what a find. Anna Viveros brought an incredible balance of wild, sexy and dangerous to the role of Mimi, offering a truly electric performance. She made some big acting choices and I was delighted that every single one of them hit.”

“Marcus Jordan brings unbridled joy to the role of Tom Collins in the first act and beautiful sentimentality in the second; it’s a marvel to behold”

“Amber Mawande-Spytek plays Joanne and just f-ing nails it. Mawande-Spytek is an incredible actor who balances the multiple aspects of Joanne simultaneously with grace and ease.”

“Josh Walker plays Benny, our villain turned hero and they are so fun to watch over the course of the show; it’s hard to take your eyes off them.”

“Everyone around me had a good time and that’s an excellent sign that the Mac has another hit on its hands.” says Peter Bergman for Berkshire Bright Focus

“The show is really held together by fledgling film-maker Mark Cohen, perfectly played by Andrew Burton Kelley. This character both acts within the show’s action and narrates the show for his documentary film in the works as it develops, never an easy task for an actor. Kelley does it all with style and grace and makes it work easily.”

“Joanne is played by Amber Mawande-Spytek in her best role since playing the daughter in Next to Normal.”

Bill Kellert states the Mac-Haydn Theatre “continues to crank out top notch professional productions at the little theatre in the country.”Nippertown

“Backed by the support of the Mac’s music director Eric Shorey, who once again does a masterful job leading the cast through the challenging and demanding roles as well as the flawless choreography as imagined by Elizabeth McGuire that has the cast oftentimes appear to float across the stage.”

“The outstanding performances of the show belong to Velez, the drag queen with the heart of gold and eternal optimism who steals the light whenever he is on the stage.”

“Alivia Cross creates an incredible set for the actors to play on. She constructs a warehouse space that is the apartment for Mark and Ross and also becomes the streets , tent city and parks of New York. Almost miraculously, Cross’s set makes the stage appear larger than the actual stage on which it is built.”

The Return of Sister Act Earns Joyous Reviews
J. Peter Bergman says if you are a fan of musicals, ‘Sister Act’ is your finest opportunity. I would say, “go, sit back and laugh” in his review for The Berkshire Edge

“I cannot imagine a better choice for this role than Wemitt. Her final moments with Deloris were so emotionally right that they made the show.”
“On the other hand, Judith Wyatt as Sister Mary Lazarus was hilarious, as was Bella Babcock as Sister Mary-Martin-of-Tours. Samantha Rhea Parrish gave an exuberant performance as Mary Patrick. The men in the show were also quite good, particularly Jake Koch, Fernando Flores, and Anthony Michael Velez in their almost-show-stopping song in Act Two, “Lady in the Long Black Dress.”

“The second offering in Mac-Haydn’s 2024 repertory season promises some comedic relief” according to Sierra Pasquale for Berkshire on Stage

“The band was bright and full the night I was in attendance and I caught Matt Levinstein conducting from off-stage, always something to be applauded. Of particular note was the costumes. Daniel Hewson performs some magic on that stage that, to go off without a hitch, certainly has some divine intervention.”

“Josh Walker, brings heart, empathy and warmth to a character who could easily be forgettable support.”

“As I was sitting in the Mac-Haydn during intermission, I couldn’t help but notice how the arc of the ceiling reminded me of the arc of so many churches I have found myself in in my lifetime and what a beautiful sign that was to sit back and enjoy the rest of the show, like an old- fashioned barn raising.”

“The Mac-Haydn always puts on a good show, in my opinion, and ‘Sister Act’ is thoroughly entertaining.” according to Adreanna Limbach for Trixie’s List

“From the moment the lights go up on the stage, Laiya Parker takes us to church as an irresistible Deloris Van Cartier. She’s equal parts silly, charming and sincere which makes her easy to cheer for as the action unfolds. Combined with her rich, soulful vocals, Parker carries the starring role effortlessly.”

“There were dozens of moments throughout Sister Act that had the audience hollering, belly laughing and clapping along to the music, which is the pure expression of joy that I want in a summertime musical.”

“If you’re in a funk and want to lift your mood, get tickets. If you like soulful vocals and a groovy beat, get tickets. If you like big laughs and a little romance, get tickets.”

Wemitt Returns As Mother Superior

Back In The Act!

Mac-Haydn legend Monica M. Wemitt returns to this iconic role in the modern classic Sister Act. Eight years ago Wemitt set the stage alight in a moving and heartfelt performance. Given the success of her debut performance in the role, you won’t want to miss it this season as she comes to it with a new perspective this season! We asked her about this experience, second time around.

Monica, what is it like taking on Mother Superior again and what is different?

“I’m more comfortable with the role and feel like instead of getting to know Mother Superior, this time around I gets to sit down, talk, and have a conversation with her. There are more vulnerabilities within her. The second time around you are able to find the nuances you normally cannot in a theatrical space such as this.”

“Not to put down earlier moments of the Mac-Haydn Theatre, but the talent and voices within this specific cast and others the artistic team has gathered over the years are “goose bumpy.” It is thrilling to know how strong of musicians we have across the board.”

“It is amazing to reprise this role knowing this theatre has grown into exactly what the founders would have ever dreamed of – Lynn and Linda would be excited and proud to know where the Mac-Haydn Theatre stands today; producing musicals and very strong ones at that.”

Sister Act opens on June 27 and runs for three weeks until July 14.

A Message from John Saunders

John Saunders Reflects on 2023 Season, Encourages Year-End Support

Dear Supporters,

It’s so hard to believe the summer has already come to a close—time sure did fly by this season. As I reflect on the overwhelming attendance and success the Mac saw this season, I am reminded of how grateful I am to each and every artist, staff member, volunteer, and loyal audience member that keeps this magical place running year in and year out. This summer was truly a triumphant one as we welcomed back such large crowds to so many hit shows.

We did have a stumble at the end thanks to that bug that just won’t quit. However, we did manage to sustain our special programming and our highly successful education program which really gives us a great sense of accomplishment and a wonderful sense of closure to the summer. I am so sorry we had to cancel the remaining Wonderettes performances but I can assure you that I will make it up to you next season!

Work is well underway and it looks like another terrific lineup of shows is heading your way for 2024. Planning the upcoming season is a huge undertaking each year and without your support to carry us through the off season, it would be simply impossible. Along with the season planning also comes the constant maintenance and improvement of the theater and our housing.

Your donations to the annual fund mean so much to the young artists who arrive each year to dazzle us all summer. They also mean the world to the staff who are able to ensure the best of the best in all departments each summer. The Mac-Haydn continues to deliver such high caliber theater each year and it is all thanks to you, our audience, who continues to support us and enjoy the offerings all season.

On a personal note, it has been such an honor and a pleasure serving as the artistic director here, and as always, I promise to deliver another hit season for 2024. Thank you for your support, loyalty, and trust year in and year out. It means the world to me.

Have a beautiful fall and holiday season and we will see each other before you know it!

My best always,

John Saunders

Artistic Director

“The Marvelous Wonderettes” “sparkles and shines!”
Lisa Jarish says “The Marvelous Wonderettes” “sparkles and shines” in her review for Berkshire On Stage

“Each performer creates a strong, vivid and unique character in their own right, and tells her character’s story through the more than two dozen songs that flow virtually non-stop through the production. Their harmonies are as full as their crinoline skirts”

“Trivers delivers big-time with a trifecta of plaintive and heartfelt vocals…A most worthy debut on the Mac’s stage indeed.”

“Delivering her story through a stunning three-song Prestage reveals her character’s journey through love, heartache, and heartbreak, delivering “Son of a Preacher Man,” and“ Maybe,” with ever-increasing anguish, until finally “Leader of the Pack” shatters her heart and the hearts of her quartet-mates listening to this heart-wrenching, soul-baring vocal confession.”

“Rachel Pantazis…has left an indelible mark on this season with her glorious, powerful soprano voice and her in-depth characterizations”

“(Pantazis’) joy shines through with her performance”

“And then there’s Cydney Gleckner. What a joy she has been at the Mac this summer. She has brought her considerable vocal chops to every production she has graced this season, and as Suzy…she turns in yet another strong signature performance.”

“Gleckner brings down the house as Suzy first pours out her anguish with her marriage with “Maybe I know” and “Rescue Me”, before segueing into demanding “Respect” in a powerful rendition that rivals Aretha Franklin at her best.”

“Ashley DeLane Burger has hit it out of the park with her solid, tight direction and inspired choreography.”

“Annie Watson’s costume design perfectly captures the full flavor of 1950s and the 1960s…Their work is accented and completed by the hair and wig design of Emily Allen, who “Marvelously” coifs the Wonderettes for their prom and reunion appearances.”

“Andrew Gmoser’s lighting, as always, sparkles and shines in all the right places, and takes a dark and almost sinister turn when called for.”

(Saunders and Colarusso) have created a most effective and evocative set for the show.”

“The Marvelous Wonderettes leaves us applauding, smiling, humming, and with warm fuzzy memories of days gone by to hold onto until the 2024 season arrives.”

Move Over Jersey Boys, The Wonderettes Are Here!

MAC-HAYDN SEASON CLOSES OUT WITH 50S/60S HIT ‘THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES’

(August 31, 2023–Chatham, NY) The Mac-Haydn Theatre’s 2023 season concludes with 50s and 60s jukebox musical, “The Marvelous Wonderettes,” running September 7-17.

Created by Roger Bean, “The Marvelous Wonderettes” is a jukebox blast from the past. It’s the night of the 1958 Springfield High School prom, and the night’s entertainment consists of four best friends; Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy, and Suzy. As they navigate life, love and the Prom Queen competition, the girls serenade with the classics from the decade. Ten years later, the girl group reunites stronger than ever, learning that the power of friendship will always keep them together—bonded forever in four-part harmony.

Ashley DeLane Burger makes her directorial debut with the production, following her work on the 2023 sell-out production of “Jersey Boys” as choreographer, and last season’s “A Chorus Line” (Associate Choreographer) and “Forever Plaid” (Choreographer, 2022 BroadwayWorld Award). She is joined by Music Director Eric Shorey and Assistant Choreographer Bella DePaola.

The production will feature lighting design by Andrew Gmoser, costume design by Annie Watson, sound design by Sean McGinley, hair and makeup design by Emily Allen, and props design by Adriana Ayala.

Starring as the four Wonderettes are Stephanie Prestage as Cindy Lou, Rachel Pantazis as Missy, Cydney Gleckner as Suzy, and, making her Mac-Haydn Debut, Adeline Trivers as Betty Jean.

Audiences will hear favorite 50s and 60s hits; featuring over 30 throwback hits like “Mr. Sandman,” “Lollipop,” “Stupid Cupid,” “Lipstick on Your Collar,” “Respect” and “It’s In His Kiss (The Shoop Shoop Song),” “The Marvelous Wonderettes” is guaranteed to have audiences humming along in their seats.

Jersey Boys a “fascinating” production
J. Peter Bergman calls “Jersey Boys” “a fine, fine production on every level” in his review for Berkshire Bright Focus

“Maguire is an excellent Valli. He is a joy to watch and to listen to.”

“Kelley does splendidly in this role, even managing to touch my heart with his sincerity and his singing.”

“Watching the group grow in their varied and difficult directions is fascinating theatre.”

“Gabe Belyeu plays lyricist/producer Bob Crewe beautifully. Kevin Weldon makes a sinister, sentimental Gyp DeCarlo totally believable.”

“This production is fascinating to watch. Director John Saunders has given the show drive and energy and still made each character stand out as an individual. He and choreographer Ashley DeLane Burger have brought us the movement and coordination of pop music of the period with a true sense of recognition.”

“Both the play and the musical numbers look great on the Mac-Haydn stage thanks to scenic designer Alivia Cross whose work transforms spaces thanks to the superb lighting by Andrew Gmoser. Emily Allen’s hair and wig design highlights the period of the show as well as do the costumes designed by Claire Mezzetta. This is a fine, fine production on every level.”

Lisa Jarish says “Jersey Boys” “explodes with perfection” in her review for Berkshire On Stage

“In Jersey Boys, Saunders has created another of his signature directorial triumphs, with a full-blooded, full-scale humdinger of a show, a good old-fashioned jukebox musical perfectly“seasoned” with incredible vocals and riveting performances, made all the more impressive and impactful because it is not “too good to be true” but actually true.”

“The Mac has assembled a veritable holy grail of performers to enact the title roles, and I have to confess I may have spent a good portion of the performance with my mouth gaping open, slack-jawed, in absolute awe of the perfection of sound coming from the golden throats of Conor Fallon, Andrew Burton Kelley, John Hannigan, Andrew Maguire.”

“The non-vocal performances of Fallon, Kelley, and Hannigan, each narrating their part of the story, are incomparable. Each embraces and truly personifies the character they represent, bringing a depth and veracity and sincerity to their roles that is essential to a fully-realized production.”

“without a doubt Andrew Maguire steals the show… in his Mac-Haydn debut, no less. As Frankie Valli, Maguire is nothing short of phenomenal, with a voice born to the role, hitting those iconic high falsetto notes with absolute purity and assurance.”

“Belyeu can always be counted to embrace whatever role he undertakes. His performances are unfailingly filled with the sheer joy of being given the opportunity to perform, to portray a character and make it his own.”

“Jacob Atkins plays Joey…AKA Joe Pesci …with an endearing hyperactive enthusiasm perfect for the character, and Kevin Weldon turns in a marvelous but all-too-brief appearance as New Jersey mob boss Gyp DeCarlo”

“Rachel Pantazis creates powerful moments in her scenes with Maguire’s Valli.”

“Kudos to choreographer Ashley DeLane Burger for her success in choreographing and coordinating the perfectly synchronized movements of legs and hands that came to be associated with the Four Seasons.”

Bill Kellert praises cast AND creatives of “Jersey Boys” in his review for Nippertown

“Mac-Haydn’s Producing Artistic Director, John Saunders, once again takes the directorial reins to steer this mammoth production.”

“Saunders does an admirable job not only directing the show but also assembling a strong technical crew as well as a talented cast of Mac-Haydn vets and newbies to help achieve his goals.”

“Choreographer Ashley DeLane Burger does a wonderful job recreating the feeling of the 1960s.”

“With its many moving pieces, Alvia Cross’s set design creates thirty-some scenes in the first act alone. Andrew Gmoser’s lighting and Sean McGinley’s sound design put you in the vibe of the time. Emily Allen’s hair design and wigs and Claire Mezzetta’s costumes round out the rock and roll era and sweep the audience back in the time continuum.”

“Shorey knows how to get the most wonderful harmonies out of the foursome as well as create beautiful numbers from the full cast. Shorey has proven to be Mac-Haydn’s strongest creative asset, from leading the band to musically directing the cast.”

“Gaudio, who never really wanted to be in the spotlight, rather preferring the background writing music, is masterfully handled by Andrew Burton Kelly. Kelly has a wonderful ability to internalize his emotions in his acting and bring it all to the surface in his vocal performance.”

“Perhaps, as it should be, the night belonged to Mac newcomer Andrew Maguire as Frankie Valli. Maguire has a voice and range that match the real Valli, note for note. His crystal-clear tenor and icy steel falsetto brought down the house song after song, most notably with the heart-wrenching rendition of “Fallen Angel.””

“It should be noted that most of the cast doubles or triples roles throughout the production with ease and finesse.”

Jeffrey Borak calls “Jersey Boys” “Breathtaking” in his review for The Berkshire Eagle

“Director John Saunders’ production of the jukebox musical “Jersey Boys” at the Mac-Haydn Theatre opens in breathtaking fashion and never lets go for an instant.”

“Beyond the smooth, confident sweep of Saunders’ production, the show’s recreation of The Four Seasons sound is at once astonishing, evocative, singular.”

“Close your eyes as the show’s Frankie Valli, Andrew Maguire, sings and you could easily believe Valli himself has taken over. Maguire’s performance overall is full and rich — an affecting portrait of a young man whose coming of age over time is roughly gained.”

“The performances throughout are strong and convincing.”

“Andrew Burton Kelley is pitch-perfect as Bob Gaudio, whose talent as a songwriter and personal sense of reason and clarity is the perfect counterpoint to Tommy’s lesser impulses.”

“Gabe Belyeu is delightful as Bob Crewe, the Four Seasons’ manager, producer and lyricist. There are equally convincing turns by Kevin Weldon as Gyp DeCarlo, a mobster who takes a liking to Frankie; Bella DePaola as Lorraine, Frankie’s second wife; and Rachel Pantazis as Frankie’s alcoholic first wife, Mary Delgado.”

“Buoyed by music director Eric Shorey’s support, and the bold, imaginative sweep of Saunders’ vision, this youthful, appealing, talented ensemble more than delivers the goods.”

MAC-HAYDN TO TRIBUTE STEPHEN SONDHEIM IN REVUE LATER THIS MONTH

A tribute to the late composer Stephen Sondheim will be presented at the Mac-Haydn Theatre August 23 and 25.

Godspell a “edgy, piercing, gritty, brilliant” piece of theatre
Lisa Jarisch calls “Godspell” “edgy, piercing, gritty, brilliant” in her review for Berkshire On Stage

“This Godspell, this gospel according to Compton, is an edgy, piercing, gritty, brilliant piece of theatre, certain to take its place as one of, if not THE, most stellar productions of the 2023 season.”

“Compton has taken the skeleton of the original piece and built an entirely new body of work, maintaining the integrity of the Gospel message while injecting new depths of meaning to the simple parables, stories and teachings that make-up the bulk of the production.”

“The songs remain the same, the plot most assuredly remains true to sharing the Gospel of Matthew, but this is singularly unique and masterful production, filled with contemporary references, exposing an occasional seamy underbelly of the beasts of betrayal, and overall offering gritty, sharp-edged, sometimes sharp-tongued lessons in life, love, and faith.”

“Stephanie Prestage gives the first of the disciple “solos” scattered like good seed through the show, delivering a beautiful rendition of “Day by Day,” probably the most recognizable song associated with the show. Her strong, pure voice swells with her newly-burgeoning love and desire to follow Jesus, and sets the bar high for all the solos to follow.”

“wherever each solo opportunity appears, it fits seamlessly into the production, elevating the high quality caliber of talent that bursts from this production”

“Fallon gives a bravura performance in his vocals and his acting, moving deftly from the enthusiastic first days as a preacher of parables, teller of tales and teacher of morals, to the tortured Son of Man approaching the end predestined for him as the Son of God.”

“It is always a joy to have Mac-Haydn favorite Andrew Burton Kelley grace the Mac-Haydn stage, and in his role as John/Judas he is in his element, giving glorious depth of voice to each and every lyric.”

“Fallon and Kelley have clearly embraced and taken their roles into their hearts, and their souls.”

“As has come to be the norm with virtually every Mac-Haydn offering, the technical quality of the production more than holds its own against the performances in every way.”

“Angela Carstensen’s costume design is, in a word, inspired.”

“Godspell at the Mac is a truly unique, brilliant, thought-provoking, cutting edge work of theater art.”

Bill Kellert calls “Godspell” “stirring and moving” in his review for Nippertown

“Working with a small cast, every performer is given their moment or two or three to shine, and shine they do. Stephanie Prestage’s Day by Day is stirring and moving. Bella DePaola offers a gutsy, seductive rendition of Turn Back, O Man. Matthew Harper Stevenson offers up a very heartfelt Light of the World. Amber Mawande-Spytek, like many of the cast, returns to the Mac stage to offer her exceptional talents to the production. Jack Koch presents an exceptional We Beseech Thee.”

“Mac-Haydn vets, Conor Fallon and Andrew Burton Kelley have masterfully grabbed the reins of the two icons.”

“Conor Fallon never waivers as the Son of God. Well aware of the fate that awaits at the play’s end, he never loses the humanity of his character or the joy that inhabits his role. Fallon is much like the ringmaster of a very complex circus.”

“As a whole, this cast has risen to the complex simplicity that the show demands.”

Jeffrey Borak calls “Godspell” “fulfilling and rewarding” in his review for The Berkshire Eagle

“Director Trey Compton and choreographer Elizabeth McGuire hold nothing back in their approach to John-Michael Tebelak and Stephen Schwartz’ “Godspell” at the Mac-Haydn Theatre. They are blessed with an able young ensemble whose members are more than capable of delivering the goods.”

“Compton has pulled out all the stops here with glitz, glamor and a hint of the flower generation in a vibrant, neon-disco-psychedelic setting (evocatively conceived by scenic designer Tania Barrenechea and lighting designers Eoghan Hartley and Andrew Gmoser) that encompasses the entire theater — onstage and in the aisles.”

“This Jesus (an accomplished, gently authoritative, world-smart Conor Fallon) delivers his message through a series of parables, which he coaxes the members of this small community to act out.”

“This evening is at its most fulfilling and rewarding when it is singing and when it is moving to McGuire’s savvy, wonderfully theatrical choreography.”

“Among the production’s highlights are Stephanie Prestage’s “Day By Day,” an object lesson in stage presence; Kassi McMillan’s brassy, belting “Learn Your Lessons Well;” Jake Koch’s lead in “We Beseech Thee;” and Fallon and Kelley’s playful duet, “All For the Best.””

“this “Godspell” manages to fill its two hours in buoyant, abundantly theatrical ways that are, when all is sung and done, all for the best.”

The Sound of Music “Radiates Joy!”
Lisa Jarisch calls “The Sound of Music” “sheer joy” in her review for Berkshire On Stage

“This is a production without a flaw. From the leading roles, to the briefest appearance of party guests and soldiers, not a foot or a note goes wrong.”

“The entire cast has clearly embraced the essence, the spirit and the meaning of this classic musical, and they put their heart and soul and not inconsiderable talents into every moment.”

“Naughton delivers each number, each note, each lyric, with absolute confidence, and it is clear that her debut at the Mac in this role surely is one of her favorite things. She radiates joy, confidence, poise, and assurance every moment on the stage.”

“If the performances of these young thespians who Saunders has collected are a portent of any kind, the future of live theatre is in most excellent hands and feet and voice with this next generation of up and coming performers.”

““Climb Ev’ry Mountain” is the soaring climax to Act 1, and is gloriously performed by Alex Haines as Mother Abbess. She enthralled the audience with her stunning delivery of this classic signature piece”

“With standard Mac-Haydn style and aplomb, the technical quality of the production is as noteworthy as the performances of the cast.”

Jeffrey Borak calls out Alex Haines’ Mother Abbess in his review for The Berkshire Eagle

“In a performance that is noteworthy throughout her time onstage for its truthfulness and emotional authenticity, Haines delivers “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” not as a showpiece but, rather, with the grace, wisdom and nurturing spirit that shapes the drama of the sequence. In that moment, those hills around the Mac-Haydn certainly do come alive.”

The von Trapps are Back at the Mac-Haydn!

THE HILLS ARE ALIVE FOR ‘THE SOUND OF MUSIC’ AT THE MAC-HAYDN

(July 13, 2023–Chatham, NY) Rodgers and Hammerstein classic “The Sound of Music” returns to the Mac-Haydn Stage for the first time in over a decade next week, running July 20 – 30.

The legendary story is a timeless tribute to the transformative power of love and music. After proving too high-spirited for her life as a postulant, Maria, an exuberant young governess brings music, laughter and joy back to a broken family—capturing the hearts of seven rambunctious children and lightening the demeanor of their militaristic father. Set in 1938 Austria before World War II, The Von Trapps face insurmountable odds as their beloved homeland confronts the impending arrival of the dangerous Nazi regime.

Producing Artistic Director John Saunders directs for the second time this season, following his fan-favorite “42nd Street” earlier this summer. Choreographer Elizabeth McGuire returns to the Mac-Haydn following her work on “Urinetown” and “The Full Monty” in 2022. They are joined by Music Director Eric Shorey and Assistant Music Director Alessandra Alcala.

The production will feature scenic design by Alivia Cross, making her Mac-Haydn design debut, along with lighting design by Andrew Gmoser, costume design by Angela Carstensen, sound design by Sean McGinley, hair and makeup design by Emily Allen, and props design by Adriana Ayala.

Leading the production as the spirited and musical Maria is Sarah Naughton, making her Mac-Haydn debut. Naughton has previously worked with companies including Second Stage, Lincoln Center, and A.R.T., in addition to her solo comedy and cabaret acts she has brought to venues including 54 Below. After his critically-acclaimed performance as Dan in last season’s “Next to Normal,” Eric Van Tielen joins the cast as Captain Georg von Trapp.

Ten local child actors join the company as the von Trapp children, split up into two alternating casts which the children have named themselves. In the “Maria’s Mischievous Misfits” cast are Molly Engelhardt (Louisa), Jack Holick (Kurt), Remy Orth (Brigitta), Adelaide Black (Marta), and Tegan Waters (Gretl). In the “G.O.A.T.s (Greatest of All Time)” cast are Riley O’Kane (Louisa), Emmett Mazurowski (Kurt), Quinn McCarthy (Brigitta), Makayla Shores (Marta), and Charlotte Miller (Gretl). Aidan Brennan and 2023 Company Member Rachel Revellese will perform with both casts as Friedrich and Liesl, respectively. A schedule of performances for both casts is available here.

Rounding out the cast are Liz Gurland (Cabaret, Pippin, Urinetown) as Elsa, Arthur Beutel (42nd Street, Footloose) as Max, and Alex Haines (Mac-Haydn Debut) as Mother Abbess.

Based on a true story, this epic classic is both thrilling and inspirational to audiences throughout the world. Featuring a trove of cherished songs, including “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “My Favorite Things,” “Do Re Mi,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and the legendary title tune, The Sound of Music promises to bring classic charm and provide a delightful musical experience for the entire family.

“The Sound of Music” features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. The story is suggested by The Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Trapp.

Footloose is “pure fun and joy”
Jeffrey Borak praises ‘Footloose’s “efficiency and integrity” in his review for The Berkshire Eagle

“Under Ledford’s direction, Prestage and Stevenson take their time developing the relationship between Ariel and Ren. The two have a beautifully crafted scene on an old bridge, late at night, that is as gentle and delicate as choreographer Bryan Knowlton’s dance numbers are big, bold and athletic.”

“Stevenson’s Ren has an unadorned, natural freshness and ingenuousness tempered somewhat by his upbringing in Chicago. He is amiable and sincere”

“As Ariel’s father, the silver-haired Dvorsky resists an easy choice to play the reverend as stock caricature. Rather, Dvorsky delivers a touching portrait of a man who, crippled by personal tragedy, is troubled by the ways in which he has gone off his path”

“Liz Gurland is just lovely as the reverend’s witty, loving wife, Vi”

“Jake Koch is a delight as Willard Hewitt”

““Footloose” clearly knows its audience. The show achieves what it needs to achieve with efficiency and integrity to the formula. To its credit, the Mac-Haydn’s “Footloose” offers formula with enrichment. Let’s hear it for the team.”

“The music is easy to sing along to, but the dancing really zings.”

“The cast, music and choreography are so wonderful that you hope the show never ends! The joyful finale Footloose had people out of their seats and ready for a standing ovation!”

Bill Kellert calls ‘Footloose’ “exceptional” in his review for Nippertown

“The Mac-Haydn production has assembled its largest cast, over 30 performers, each of whom is better and more talented than the next.”

“At the helm of this mega production are three enormously talented Mac-Haydn vets: Director Erin Spears Ledford, Choreographer Bryan Knowlton, and Music Director Eric Shorey.”

“Ledford takes the cast through life’s emotional ups and downs in Bomont. She reigns in the drama and plays to the humor while always having her characters appear three-dimensional. Knowlton’s tight, complex choreography is exceptional.”

“Vocally, the show is stolen by Kassi McMillan with her rendition of the classic hit, Let’s Hear It For The Boy.”

“Dvorsky is always a pleasure to see on the Mac stage. His commanding presence and strong masterful voice offer a wonderful facade for this broken man.”

“Mrs. Vi Moore is very nicely portrayed by Elizabeth Gurland whose Act Two song “Can You Find It in Your Heart?” is a highlight of the show.”

Cut Loose with FOOTLOOSE

MAC-HAYDN THEATRE CUTS LOOSE WITH ‘FOOTLOOSE’ THIS MONTH

(June 29, 2023–Chatham, NY) The Mac-Haydn Theatre continues its summer season of hits with “Footloose,” the Tony and Grammy winning musical based on the decade-defining film of the same name, running July 6 – 16.

Coming to the Mac-Haydn stage for only the second time in its history, “Footloose” follows the story of Ren McCormack, who receives anything but a warm welcome in his new hometown when he learns of the local ban on dancing instituted by the controlling preacher. When the reverend’s rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, his reputation is on the line as he skirts the law, leading his class down the path to a proper prom night.

Director Erin Spears Ledford and Choreographer Bryan Knowlton, the team that earned rave reviews for their collaboration on last season’s “Kiss Me, Kate,” reunite to helm the production. They are joined by Music Director Eric Shorey and Assistant Music Director Alessandra Alcala.

The production will feature scenic design by Erin Kiernan, along with lighting design by Andrew Gmoser, costume design by Bethany Marx, sound design by Sean McGinley, hair and makeup design by Emily Allen, and props design by Adriana Ayala.

The theatre is delighted to welcome Stephanie Prestage and Matthew Stevenson as they make their Mac-Haydn debuts in the leading roles of Ariel Moore and Ren McCormack.

Broadway veteran George Dvorsky returns to the Mac-Haydn as Reverend Shaw Moore. After his audience-favorite performance as Cladwell in “Urinetown” last season, Dvorsky will debut his solo show “Something Wonderful,” as part of the Limited Performance Series later this summer in addition to his role as the Reverend. Dvorsky is joined by fellow Mac-Haydn alumni Liz Gurland (“Cabaret,” “Pippin,” “Urinetown”) as Vi Moore.

In supporting roles are Jonah Hale as Chuck, Kassi McMillan as Rusty, Jake Koch as Willard, Jeannine Trimboli as Ethel McCormack, Belle Babcock as Wendy Jo, and Amber Mawande-Spytek as Urleen. The full company features Mac-Haydn actors as well as an ensemble of local actors to round out the cast.

The “Footloose” hit score includes iconic numbers “Holding Out for a Hero,” “Let’s Hear it for the Boy,” and the iconic title song “Footloose.” With dazzling dance numbers and an electrifying musical score, Footloose celebrates the exhilaration of youth, the wisdom of listening to one another, and the power of forgiveness – and is sure to have audiences inspired to hit the dance floor.

“Footloose” features music by Tom Snow and lyrics by Dean Pitchford. The stage adaptation is by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie, and is based on the original screenplay by Dean Pitchford.
The production features additional music by Eric Carmen, Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins and Jim Steinman.

“In her Mac-Haydn debut, Rachel Revellese bursts onto the stage like the rising star Peggy Sawyer dreams of becoming. Her voice is as true and strong as her feet are fleet.”

Mac-Haydn Taps Into Summer With 42nd Street

MAC-HAYDN THEATRE TAPS INTO THE START OF SUMMER WITH “42ND STREET”

(June 15, 2023–Chatham, NY) The Mac-Haydn Theatre’s 54th summer season opens with the Tony-winning tap musical “42nd Street,” running June 22 through July 2.

In this classic show-within-a-show, aspiring chorus girl Peggy Sawyer lands her first professional gig in a new Broadway production, led by big-time New York producer Julian Marsh. Set in the height of the Great Depression, the show faces threats of closing—and a serious problem when the leading lady breaks her ankle on opening night.

Artistic Director John Saunders opens the season in the director’s chair, a role he will fulfill two more times this season for “The Sound of Music” and “Jersey Boys.” “There is a joyous sense of fulfillment in a way by bringing “42nd Street” back this summer,” said Saunders. “It was scheduled for our 2020 season and we all know how that went. Now we can finally present this iconic “showbiz” musical packed with optimism just the way we dreamt it many years ago.”

Saunders is joined by Choreographer Mandy Modic, Music Director Eric Shorey and Assistant Music Director Alessandra Alcala. The production will feature scenic design by Erin Kiernan, along with lighting design by Andrew Gmoser, costume design by Bethany Marx, sound design by Sean McGinley, hair and makeup design by Emily Allen, and props design by Adriana Ayala.

After earning a 2022 Berkshire Theatre Award for his solo show “A Call to Places” last season, Mac-Haydn veteran Gabe Belyeu steps into the iconic role of Julian Marsh, a role originated by Jerry Orbach. He is joined by Madison Stratton as Dorothy Brock, who has been seen previously on the Mac-Haydn stage in “Camelot” (2019), “Spamalot” (2017) and “Major Arcana” (2021).

Making her Mac-Haydn debut, Rachel Revellese is Peggy Sawyer. A rising senior at Syracuse University, Revellese has previously appeared at Interlakes Theatre and is the recipient of numerous regional and national titles in tap dance.

Among the returnees of the cast are Jonah Hale as Billy Lawlor, Bella DePaola as “Anytime” Annie, Kristen Clark Bielefeldt as Maggie Jones, and Brian Wagner as Abner Dillon. Jake Koch and Arthur Beutel make their Mac-Haydn debuts as Bert Barry and Pat Denning, respectively.

42nd Street’s grand return to the Mac-Haydn is sure to deliver an extraordinary night out. Chock-full of Broadway standards including “We’re In The Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway,” “Shuffle Off to Buffalo,” “Dames,” and of course “Forty-Second Street” – this iconic love letter to the theater will have audiences shaking their shoes.

“42nd Street” features music by Harry Warren, lyrics by Al Dubin, and a book by Michael Stewart & Mark Bramble. The musical is based on the novel by Bradford Ropes. The show was originally produced on Broadway by David Merrick, with direction and choreography by Gower Champion.

The grant is the largest amount received for a single funding year in the Chatham summer theatre’s history.

“We are delighted to receive this level of support from NYSCA,” said Managing Director James Rodgers, discussing what the award means for the Mac-Haydn. “It is a validation of the work we have been doing both on and off the stage during the last several years. The historic grant will go toward the Mac-Haydn’s marketing costs, enhancing the areas of print and digital media, advertising, promotions, publicity and additional program costs. Rodgers added that this support could not have come at a better time, enabling the Mac-Haydn to continue their outreach into a wider community. “If people don’t know we are here, how can they come and see us? This grant will help us allocate the resources required to introduce our organization, and our work, a little more loudly!”

NYSCA Chair Katherine Nicholls said, “On behalf of the entire Council, I congratulate The Mac-Haydn on this grant award. Their creative work provides the benefits of the arts to both their community and all of New York. Mac-Haydn Awarded $10,000 from NYSCA

MAC-HAYDN AWARDED $10,000 IN RECOVERY FUNDING FROM NEW YORK STATE COUNCIL ON THE ARTS

(November 8, 2022–Chatham, NY) The Mac-Haydn Theatre has received a Regrowth and Capacity grant of $10,000 from the New York State Council on the Arts. The grant will go toward the organization’s COVID-19 costs, as the Chatham theatre continues its ongoing recovery from pandemic challenges.

Mac-Haydn’s Managing Director James Rodgers spoke to the significance of this support: “NYSCA’s contribution aided us in providing the resources to maintain a safe environment for our staff and patrons during this extremely challenging period. These resources, combined with the diligent work from our staff, allowed us to maintain an uninterrupted 2022 summer season. This was a remarkable achievement under the circumstances.”

After shuttering for the entirety of its 2020 season, the Mac-Haydn reopened in July of 2021 and recently concluded its first full, 4-month season back since 2019 this past summer. COVID-19-related expenses have ranged from PPE, to company-wide weekly antigen testing, to COVID Compliance Officer Certification Training.

COVID-19 Protocols for the 2023 Season
COVID-19 Protocols for the 2023 Season

After examining statewide, nationwide, and industry-wide policies, as well as recommendations from the CDC and local health departments, we have lifted our vaccination and mask requirements for audience members and volunteers during the 2023 season. Mask-wearing in the theatre will remain optional, based on your own comfort level. Full time staff and company members will still be required to be fully vaccinated.

We are so excited to have reached the point where we can welcome each and every member of our community back into the theater again this year. We have greatly appreciated your compliance with our protocols for the past two years; we know the requirement has been challenging, restrictive and frustrating. Believe us when we say, we wish we didn’t have to do it. However, it is worth noting that we have managed to navigate the past two seasons with no cancellations or call-outs due to cases of COVID-19 within our company and crew in both 2021 and 2022. That’s right, zero.

At a time when it seemed impossible, your support and commitment to these protocols has allowed us to confidently and safely produce live theater during a pandemic – which is pretty incredible. We are so proud of our community and truly cannot thank you enough.

All that being said, we do not know what the future will bring and if there were to be an extreme change in the course of the virus leading to worsening conditions, we reserve the right to reimplement this policy if necessary. However, if our policies on vaccinations or masks change and you are no longer able to attend, any tickets you purchase will be fully refunded.

With Gratitude,
The Mac-Haydn Theatre COVID-19 Compliance Team

Forever Plaid is “90 minutes of vocal liquid gold”
Bill Kellert calls “Forever Plaid” “90 minutes of vocal liquid gold” in his review for Nippertown

“Together, they are a compilation of sweet, insecure, somewhat neurotic, and incredibly talented young men who have been given the opportunity to live out their one last dream.”

“Together, The Plaids give us 90 minutes of vocal liquid gold.”

“Smooth, silky, and joyful. Cody Edwards sets up most of the numbers. His strong lead voice carries the group through “Three Coins in The Fountain”, “Moments to Remember”, “Perfidia”, and “Catch a Falling Star” to name but a few.”

“John Hannigan’s deep rich bass offers depth to all the numbers and takes center stage with the “Sixteen Tons”/“Chain Gang” medley.”

“Kylan Ross’s soaring, crystal clear, pristine tenor shines in “Cry”, and Miles Yokom’s baritone continually rounds out the group’s sound throughout the show.”

“What makes this production work so well is a combination of Eric Shorey’s musical direction and Ashley Delane Burger’s choreography. Director James Barry has shown his ability as a secure director by allowing the music to be the star of this show.”

J. Peter Bergman says “Forever Plaid” is a “most satisfying” production in his review for The Berkshire Edge

“If you’ve never seen this show before it is one not to miss, and if you’re a fan of the piece, James Barry has directed a smash hit version of it for the Mac.”

“Kylan Ross, by stepping back from lead roles into this ensemble work, has solidified his place as an emerging star of the company”

“Barry’s staging of the play gives all four men that special something that defines musical groups as special people who understand cooperation in the notes, and the choreography by Ashley DeLane Burger of their lives together is as special as their story.”

“costumes, designed by Claire Mezzetta, are delightful and a grand piano centered set design by Kevin Gleason is practically perfect in every way. Andrew Gmoser’s fun lighting gives the quartet everything they need and also provides subtle showcasing of music director Eric Shorey as needed.”

“This light comedy is both entertaining and thought-provoking and ultimately most satisfying. It’s a sweet and sentimental combination of a show and well worth devoting some time to as the summer season wanes and warps into Autumn.”

Andrew Andrews says you will “enjoy every moment” in their review for Opplaud

“Covering more than a dozen songs from the fifties and a retro rendition of at least one from the early sixties, the four young men who have been frozen in time harmonize, croon and synchronize their steps…”

“You can almost smell the Brylcreem as the small but talented cast belts out one vocal harmony after another, with choreography that’s as tight and enjoyable as the singing…”

“anyone who came of age in the 1950s is sure to enjoy every moment of this performance…”

“For those of us who grew up in the era of Happy Days and Sha Na Na, plenty of songs are familiar enough to sing along…”

“the show’s greatest highlight is an amazingly-funny circus parody of The Ed Sullivan Show. Quoting Frankie’s passionate, accidental outburst, “It was good, dammit!””

Xanadu a “Gift from the Gods!”
J. Peter Bergman says “Xanadu” will leave you “breathless” in his review for The Berkshire Edge

“The company does wonderful work on stage and off. The costumes designed by Angela Carstensen are often as silly as the story. Lighting by Andrew Gmoser highlights each of the
moments perfectly. Kevin Gleason’s sets capture the hilarity of the situation. The company of
nine players, some of them doubling their roles, are excellent.”

“Kelley is a lovely foil for the nonsense surrounding his character and Galorenzo and Pantazis are such delicious villains they should always be given the chance to play the bad guys.”

“Yancey entertains as always. Two of the muses (all sisters, remember) are hysterically played by Ricky Dobbs (Thalia, Muse of Comedy) and Patrick MacLennan (Terpsicore, Muse of Dance).”

“A wonderful choice to cover the difficulties of the transition from Summer to Autumn, I suggest that you get your tickets now, get to Chatham and indulge your entertainment needs with “Xanadu” while you can. It doesn’t play every night, but seeing Robin Campbell’s humorous take on modern-day’s man in relationship to the eternal values of the world is worth the effort.”

Trixie Starr calls the production “A Gift From the Gods” in her review for Trixie’s List

“As a Gen Xer, I knew all the songs – I’m Alive, Suddenly, Magic, Evil Woman – you’ve heard them all before. The colorful costumes and dance routines are fantasmic! There’s an incredible tap dance routine by performer Tezz Yancey – based on the movie’s performance by Gene Kelly.”

“The multi-talented lead actress, Kira/Clio, played by Lucy Rhoades, can belt out a song, dance up a storm, roller-skate around a small stage, and squawk out an Australian accent with gusto!”

“Kudos to the set and costume designers, Kevin Gleason and Angela Carstensen, for a scene filled with life-sized Greek mythical characters, such as a white centaur with gold glittering hooves.”

“Singing, dancing, sets, costumes, and comedy – it’s all there at Xanadu – a gift from the Gods! Sweeter than ambrosia, Xanadu is a delight!”

“Don’t walk – skip jauntily – or better yet, roller-skate to the Mac-Haydn”

Bill Kellert says “Xanadu” “pure comic camp” in his review for Nippertown

“Andrew Burton Kelley returns to the Mac stage, and it appears that this is the role he is clearly having the most fun with this season. Lucy Rhoades joins the Mac-Haydn family and fits right in. Kelley and Rhoades are a dynamic duo on stage.”

“Kira and Sonny are both very lovable characters. The actors filling the shoes, or in Rhoades case, the roller skates, are a delight.”

“Both possess strong voices, have great sense of comic timing and make their time on stage, which is almost nonstop, appear effortless.”

“While the sisters are all excellent, outstanding in the group are Ricky Dobbs and Rachel Pantazis as Thailia and Calliope.”

“Julie Galorenzo, Melpomene (the evil sister), is a joy to watch. She is clearly great at being evil. Her strong singing voice soars in “Evil Women”. It is her asides, mostly visual, to the audience that had the small but very appreciative crowd coming unglued at the show.”

“Tezz Yancey once again dazzles the appreciative crowd with his wonderful tap dancing ability.”

“Director Robin Campbell has elevated this mindless two hours to pure comic camp.”

“Choreographer David Tankersley and Music Director Bobby McCoy have worked together to present the best in eighties music and have us believe that we are all in the world’s first roller disco.”

“Andrew Gmoser’s lighting and Sean McGinley’s sound design fill in the voids beautifully in Kevin Gleason’s somewhat spartan set.”

Showstoppers a “Tremendously Entertaining” Production
Andrew Andrews calls “Showstoppers” “tremendously entertaining” in their review for Opplaud

“Regular readers already know the high regard I hold for the Mac-Haydn, so it should come as no surprise that I found this year’s Showstoppers tremendously entertaining.”

“Opening with perfect choreography to “Rhythm of Life” (Sweet Charity) and closing with perfect harmony to “Seasons of Love” (Rent), the ensemble numbers sandwiched an uninterrupted stream of solos, each highlighting the individual talents of the performers…”

“Lucy Rhoades’ impeccable singing, dancing and acting in her delivery of “If I Were a Bell…”

“Showstoppers proves that the Hudson Valley can’t just claim a handful of highly-skilled performers—we’re full of them”

“proof-positive that you don’t need to head into Manhattan and pay twice as much for a showcase this enjoyable from a cast with this much talent.”

J. Peter Bergman says “Showstoppers” lives up to its name in his review for The Berkshire Edge

“It did, indeed, stop the show cold garnering as much applause as it deserved, for the company
chorus sang it like an anthem for this theater’s works of arts.”

“It was followed by “What Do I Need With Love?” from Thoroughly Modern Millie sung handsomely by Cody Edwards and “If I Were a Bell”, a comedy-ballad from Guys and Dolls adorably performed by Lucy Rhoades.”

“After much well-deserved cheers from the audience, Trevor Squiers sang “Forest for the Trees” from The Spitfire Grill, a 2001 off-Broadway musical. He moved us with its sentiments.”

Bill Kellert says “Showstoppers” features “some of the most gifted performers” in his review for Nippertown

“The full cast opened the show with a stunningly choreographed number from Sweet Charity, “The Rhythm of Life”.”

“What Producing Artistic Director John Saunders has sandwiched between the two numbers is a most satisfying 70 or so minutes of some of the most gifted performers the theatre has had the pleasure to present.”

“Music Director and Arranger Eric Shorey has led the house orchestra all season, as well as the productions with a deftness of talent. He has brought out the best in the performers all season and continues in this review.”

“Choreographer Holly Lauren Dayton is a truly amazing talent. Whether she was moving around a cast of 20+ on the stage, or a duo, trio, or quartet of dancers, she has made them all shine brightly.”

“Julia Hajjar’s “Love You Didn’t Do Right By Me” from White Christmas was the torch song highlight of the show.”

“Tezz Yancey, who combined adlib-ed commentary putting together a song from objects the audience held up, to his amazing tap dancing, gave the audience the total package.”

“That being said, the overall company at Mac-Haydn this season has been incomparable to any previous season. It appears every year that John Saunders has assembled a group that, on the whole, has topped the talent showcased previously.”

Monica Wemitt Is Back On Stage
Monica Wemitt Back At The Mac!

That’s right, Monica Wemitt makes her grand return to the Mac-Haydn stage this week for the first time in three years! We caught up with Monica this week to chat about what she’s been up to in the meantime, and what it means to return to our stage.

Q: How excited are you to be back on stage at the Mac-Haydn?

A: Not only is it exciting to be on the stage, but to be able to work in this new configuration is so much fun!

Q: What have you been up to since you were last seen on our stage?

A: Aside from being the Covid Compliance Manager here at the theatre, I pivoted into doing audio books. It’s such a fulfilling job to be able to record, edit and master the tracks I record for these books. I also was the soloist at St. Mary’s in Waterford for period between Thanksgiving and Easter for the past two years.

Q: What was your most memorable role at the Mac?

A: Honestly there are just too many to list, but the ones that come immediately to mind are Miss Hannigan in ANNIE, Frau Blucher in YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN and Carmen in CURTAINS.

Q: Tell us about your role in “The Full Monty”?

A: That would be the role of Jeanette and she is amazing. Not one to pull her punches, a heart of gold, and quite a saucy way of speaking.

Q: What is the most exciting part of being in the cast of “The Full Monty”?

A: To be in such a fun show. The music is great, the script is really well-written and to be performing with this cast is a real honor, and of course to be working with Todd Underwood (Director) and Lizzie McGuire (Choreographer) who give everyone the liberty to create.

Next to Normal called ‘Phenomenal’
J. Peter Bergman calls ‘Next to Normal’ some of the Mac-Haydn’s best work in his review for The Berkshire Edge

“This is the show that director John Saunders has brought to vivid life and it is one of the best shows he has ever presented at this theater. I guarantee you will be moved and motivated by
this six-character extravaganza. I guarantee it.”

“…the stage superbly designed by Emma Cummings.”

Mawande-Spytek is the best she has ever been…”

Kirkpatrick is wonderful as Diana. She sings with fervor over her troubles and her attempts at understanding what has happened to her and her lovely voice makes it difficult to believe she has been so thoroughly under siege.”

Van Tielen makes us understand how hard it is to be kind to someone who takes emotional risks to the cliff’s edge. He also has a fabulous voice…”

“This is (Belyeu)’s finest work at the Mac-Haydn since his Man of LaMancha.”

“The physical production is stunning with some of Andrew Gmoser’s most dynamic and
illuminating lighting design. Bethany Marx’s costumes create their own revelations for these
characters. Caitlin Maxwell’s wigs flesh out characters nicely.”

“Conductor Eric Shorey and his five member music ensemble play the score so well you would think they were born to play it.”

“This is one of my favorite shows, one I never anticipated seeing at this theater. I am so glad they chose to do it. I think everyone should see it, and maybe even twice.”

Bill Kellert calls ‘Next to Normal’ ‘a breath of fresh air’ in his review for Nippertown

“This play is so next to normal from anything you have come to expect from Mac-Haydn, and it is a breath of fresh air.”

“Kirkpatrick’s majestic voice carries with it all the nuance and emotion that Diana is living.”

“Van Tielen’s interpretation beautifully tempers Dan’s otherwise clawing, overly cheerful upbeat character. His vibrant singing voice adds much to his characterization.”

“Belyeu manages to inhabit two completely opposite characters both physically and emotionally, such that when he returns to the stage he is almost unrecognizable until you hear his voice. He does a phenomenal job in the dual roles.”

“Mawande-Spytek shines as she moves through a series of complex emotions, from hate and resentment, to maturity and a realization of what life has put in her path.”

“Kelly struts his stuff as the ever-willing, caring boyfriend longing to simply understand and provide support and compassion for his girlfriend.”

“Kylan Ross brings a maturity and depth of performance to this role, running the gambit of emotions from A to Z, that we have not seen from him until now on the Mac stage.”

“This entire production has been wrapped as a stunning gift presented to the audience inside Emma Cummings scenic design, with Andrew Gmoser’s beautiful lighting design, Bethany Marx’s costumes, Caitlin Maxwell’s wigs, Eric Shorey’s music direction, and the Next To Normal band.”

“This production is flawlessly presented under Saunders’ directorial tutelage.”

Barbara Waldinger says “Next to Normal” us an unforgettable production in her review for Berkshire On Stage

“Director John Saunders has shepherded an exceedingly gifted cast and crew in a moving, sensitive, haunting production that will not soon be forgotten by those who are fortunate enough to see it.”

“The difficult vocal demands of the music are met by the strong, expressive voices of each member of the cast.”

“From the opening number to her dramatic final exit, Beth Kirkpatrick’s Diana commands the stage, taking the audience with her on an emotionally-wrenching journey.”

“Eric Van Tielen is her extraordinarily patient and loving husband Dan, whose sweet tenor voice and demeanor underline his helplessness and vulnerability in the face of Diana’s rage and suffering.”

“This exquisite production should provide an impetus for all the theatres that dream of taking risks but haven’t yet found the courage to do so.”

BroadwayWorld‘s Marc Savitt praises “Next to Normal”

“In their promotional materials for NEXT TO NORMAL, Mac-Haydn, advised it would be “unlike anything you have seen on our stage. Trust us when we tell you, this show is not to be missed.” I am very happy to say they were correct. This production is phenomenal.”

“The cast of six includes Beth Kirkpatrick as Diana, Eric Van Tielen as Dan, Amber Mawande-Spytek as Natalie, Kylan Ross as Gabe, Andrew Burton Kelley as Henry, and Gabe Belyeu as Dr. Madden. Each is highly skilled, well cast, and deliver near flawless performances as does the orchestra, and the creative team.”

“To those who might hesitate and think that a musical centered around mental health might be too far away from “normal”, I suggest that “normal” is a setting on a clothes dryer. I respectfully add: get over it, and see this phenomenal production while you can!”

Jeffrey Borak says “Next to Normal” ‘Raises the Bar’ in his review for The Berkshire Eagle

“powerful, confident, riveting production”

“Director John Saunders’ production comes at its audience with a style, self-assurance and poise that raises an already high bar at the Mac-Haydn.”

“Kirkpatrick delivers a brutally honest portrayal of a woman trying to do her best navigating several worlds that collide into one another.”

“Van Tielen is profoundly affecting as a loving husband doing the best he can to hold his head – as well as those of his daughter and wife – above water.”

“Saunders, his cast and music director Eric Shorey and the other five members of his six-member music ensemble are more than up to the challenges. The limb they all have climbed out upon shows no sign of falling. They do themselves proud.”

Critics Call ‘Kiss Me, Kate’ a ‘Triumph’
Matthew Moross calls Kiss Me Kate “a scorching good time” in his review for The Daily Gazette

“Kiss Me Kate is a must-see”

Axtell and Lustig are superb. Axtell’s rich baritone sails through “Were Thine That Special Face” with glorious color while Lustig offers a very lovely, wistful take on “So in Love.” Together the pair are wonderfully dynamic in the playful shared memory of “Wunderbar.””

“Filled with youthful energy, the production is sprightly directed by Erin Spears Ledford and well-choreographed by Bryan Knowlton.”

“There are many moments to praise and point out. There is Lucy Rhoades as the simmering sexpot Bianca, nailing Porter’s classic “Always True to You Darlin’ in my Fashion.”

Harrison Asher Smith as Bill Calhoun, who is just one of the objects of Bianca’s affection, who scores big with his character’s declaration of devotion, “Bianca.””

“And there is Jared Martin as Paul, who brilliantly leads the cast as they rip the roof off of the theater with the standout moment of the production, “Too Darn Hot,” at the top of Act 2. The staging, lighting and energy from the cast in just that number alone, is well worth the price of admission.”

“One of the best productions I have seen at Mac-Haydn in quite a while.”

J. Peter Bergman calls ‘Kiss Me, Kate’ “another triumph for the Mac-Haydn” in his review for The Berkshire Edge

“All of the principals have their motivations and director Erin Spears Ledford has used those
needs subliminally to make the show a more dynamic examination of love’s complications when
other needs are paramount. It works.”

“These well-defined characters live out their conflicts, both external and internal, on the Mac-Haydn stage and stop the show with their songs while they do it. All four actors perform their special material extremely well and that keeps the familiar songs inside the show where they belong.”

Lustig’s classically trained voice sets off her ballads well and gives her that extra oomph she uses to make “Wunderbar” and “I Am Ashamed That Women Are So Simple” into extraordinary moments.”

Axtell sings the difficult character list songs with a simplicity that seems next to impossible. His Petruchio is softer than many actors before him but this works for his Fred.”

“Others in the company who add to the show’s success are Nina Laing as Hattie, Jared Martin as Paul and Jordan Bunshaft and Jonah Hale as 1st and 2nd Man, those little gangsters who stop the show more than once with their comedy song “Brush Up Your Shakespeare.””

“Technically the company has put together a beautiful show. Bryan Knowlton’s complicated choreography is delightful. Music Director Emily Croome and her six musicians do well by Porter’s music. Daniel Hewson delivers excellent 1940’s costumes. Andrew Gmoser has provided excellent lighting design work as usual. Caitlin Maxwell’s hair design is perfectly period as well.”

“It literally has something for everybody: music, story, dialogue that takes you by storm, dancing that leaves you breathless. The company is as strong as the principals. It is another triumph for the Mac-Haydn.”

Trixie Starr calls ‘Kiss Me Kate’ stellar in her review for Trixie’s List

“I have always been amazed by the costumes at the Mac-Hadyn – Kiss Me, Kate is no exception. The colorful Italian Renaissance outfits were stunning, well-designed, and flawless. Even the actors’ wardrobes, wearing next-to-nothing, in “It’s Too Darn Hot” were perfect!”

“The performances by leading cast members, Meredith Lustig as Lilli Vanessi (Katherine) and Michael Axtell as Fred Graham (Petruchio) were stellar!”

“The young, scantily-clad performers are an absolute pleasure!”

Andrew Andrews says the production delivers in all elements in their review for Opplaud

“From its opening number (“Another Op’nin’, Another Show”) to it’s closing reprise (“Kiss Me, Kate”), this production delivers all of the spectacular song-and-dance that Mac-Haydn performances are known for.”

“Donning a thousand fine costumes over the course of the evening, the company is particularly entertaining when the lot of them take the stage for the larger dance routines…”

“the performance is delightful…”

“with vocals by Meredith Lustig (Vanessi) and the footwork during “Tom, Dick or Harry” (Lucy Rhoades, Harrison Asher Smith, Troy Wheeler and Patrick MacLennan) especially standing out.”

“Watching the choreography of “Too Darn Hot,” also, was too damn fun…”

“the cast and crew delivered all of the pleasure and professionalism that I’ve come to expect from a presentation at the Mac-Haydn, and I can hardly wait to return in a few weeks for their regional premiere of Next to Normal.”

Macey Levin says Kiss Me Kate is “terrific” in his review for Berkshire On Stage

“The songs are pleasantly sung and the choreography by Bryan Knowlton is brisk and rollicking.”

Lustig as Lilli has a beautiful voice which serves her and the production well especially for “So in Love.” Her acting is both expressive and subtle lending varying levels to her character.”

Rhoades and Smith add immeasurably with their voices, comic timing and dancing as seen in “Why Can’t You Behave.””

“The various sets designed by Erin Kiernan are brilliant, especially the one for Shrew. The transformation from the backstage scenes to the set for Shrew, given the amount of set pieces that have to be removed and setting up the new set, takes only seconds maintaining the momentum. Andrew Gmoser’s lighting complements the spirit of the show. The seven-piece orchestra led by Emily Croome brings life to the myriad musical numbers.”

“Mac-Haydn does terrific work and this is a terrific show, especially to introduce younger audiences to a true American classic.”

Critics Call Urinetown a #1 Production
Jeff Borak calls Urinetown a “knock-your-socks-off” production in his review The Berkshire Eagle

“Not the stuff of your average Broadway musical but, then, there is nothing average or typical about this devilish, witty show, especially given the dazzling, sly, extremely savvy knock-your-socks-off production at the Mac-Haydn Theatre through July 17.”

“…Hope (a pitch-perfect Nina Laing whose singing voice is crystalline and who perfectly catches Hope’s ingenuous belief that everyone has a heart somewhere).”

“Director Trey Compton gets it, and how. There is just enough exaggeration, just enough self-awareness and tongue in cheek in Compton’s production but never more than that. Compton nudges boundaries without crossing them.”

“Mcguire takes full advantage of the space with choreography that is, by turns, tight and expansive; theatrical; stylish; totally in keeping with material that draws on “Urinetown’s” musical theater traditions while establishing its own personality at the same time.”

“Compton’s cast more than rises to the material’s occasion and Compton’s approach. The performances throughout are robust, full out.”

“Janet Dickinson brings a canny Dickensian-Brechtian flavor to her performance as Penelope Pennywhistle, who is in charge of Public Amenity No. 9, “the poorest, filthiest urinal in town.”

“Jordan Bunshaft is delightful as Officer Lockstock’s partner, Officer Barrel.”

“And, of course, there is the absolutely irresistible Sarah Chiu as Little Sally, a charmer who often gets right to the heart of the matter when others can’t.”

“Well, until there is a next time, there is this “Urinetown” here; now. It’s a dandy; an impressively smart, highly theatrical show packaged in an unspeakably smart, enormously entertaining production.”

Urinetown Makes Mac-Haydn Debut

‘URINETOWN’ MAKES MAC-HAYDN DEBUT NEXT WEEK

(June 29, 2022–Chatham, NY) “Urinetown” makes its debut at the Mac-Haydn Theatre, running July 7-17. Planned for the Mac-Haydn’s 2020 season (but postponed due to COVID), the production is two years in the making.

Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Urinetown is hilariously funny, remarkably irreverent and touchingly sincere. A dire water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens of Urinetown are forced to pay a single malevolent company to use the only available amenities, when one citizen of Urinetown decides that they’ve had enough.

“Originally scheduled for 2020, Urinetown was not a great fit for last year’s lineup but I was determined to get the show back on this year’s season,” said Producing Artistic Director John Saunders. “Funnily, or not so funnily enough depending on your viewpoint, it is even more relevant today than just a few years ago.”

Trey Compton makes his Mac-Haydn directorial debut after previously directing with The Fulton, Riverside, Engeman, Sierra Repertory,  The Herb Strauss, Pittsburgh Musical Theatre, Millbrook Playhouse, and most recently at Cortland Repertory Theatre. Compton is joined by seasoned Mac-Haydn choreographer Elizabeth McGuire, whose previous credits in Chatham include “Camelot” (2019) and “Pippin” (2021).

“I’m so very thrilled Urinetown will be shared with audiences at Mac-Haydn,” said Compton. “The show is musical theatre satire at its best. It brilliantly walks the line between thought provoking, affecting theatre and ‘pee your pants funny’ musical comedy (pun very much intended).”

Compton and McGuire are joined by Music Director Eric Shorey and Assistant Music Director David Thatcher Maglione. The production will feature scenic design by Erin Kiernan, lighting design by Andrew Gmoser, costume design by Bethany Marx, sound design by Nick Caburis, and props design by David Tankersley, who will also assist Kiernan.

Broadway’s George Dvorsky returns to the Mac-Haydn stage as Caldwell B. Cladwell. Dvorsky’s past roles with the theatre include Mushnik in the 2019 production of “Little Shop of Horrors” and his Berkshire Theatre Award-winning performance as Warbucks in 2018’s “Annie.”

Dvorsky is joined by newcomer Janet Dickinson as the menacing Penelope Pennywise. Dickinson is no stranger to the stage, having appeared regionally and on Broadway in shows including “Anastasia the Musical,” “Bullets Over Broadway,” “How The Grinch Stole Christmas,” and “Happiness” at Lincoln Center.

The “Urinetown” cast features Kylan Ross as Bobby Strong, Gabe Belyeu as Officer Lockstock, Nina Laing as Hope Cladwell, and Sarah Chiu as Little Sally. Rounding out the cast are Jessie J. Potter (Soupy Sue), Bella DePaola (Little Becky Two-Shoes), Jordan Bunshaft (Officer Barrel), Harrison Smith (Mr. McQueen), Ricky Dobbs (Dr. Billeaux), Trevor Squiers (Tiny Tom), Jared Martin (Billy Boy Bill), Patrick MacLennan (Robbie The Stockfish), Zoe Schneider-Smith (Cladwell’s Secretary), Amber Mawande-Spytek (Mrs. Millennium), Mikel Hunter (Hot Blades Harry/Joseph “Old Man” Strong), Liz Gurland (Josephine “Ma” Strong/Old Woman), Brian Wagner (Senator Fipp), Holly Lauren Dayton, Clementine Kline, Anna Langlois, Troy Wheeler, Anthony Velez, and Kyle Marra.

Compton says he is thrilled to explore a world hysterically and dangerously close to our own.  “Urinetown does what the great American musical should do,” said Saunders. “It makes you laugh, it makes you want to sing, and above all else, it really makes you think.”

“Urinetown” features a book by Greg Kotis, music by Mark Hollmann, and lyrics by Mark Hollmann & Greg Kotis.

Vaccination and masks are required for all patrons. For tickets, please visit www.machaydntheatre.org or call the box office at (518) 392-9292.

Writing this annual greeting to you, I find myself so completely struck with gratitude for the home the Mac-Haydn Theatre has given so many artists for more than 50 years. And welcoming these thousands of artists has been YOU—loyal, supportive, and above all, determined to keep the magic alive year after year. I’m also incredibly grateful to be able to report that we made it through what seemed like an insurmountable crisis with the success of the 2021 season. So, first, a big thank you for making the impossible possible once again.

Together we have faced the many challenges of the last two years and have landed squarely on our feet to be able to plan for the 2022 season. From our Covid-19 protocols to our reconfigured stage, we had many new obstacles to overcome and we did just that. We had zero cases of Covid-19—our hard work and planning paid off. And here I will add yet another THANK YOU for your flexibility and cooperation as we navigated a summer we will never forget. We may not have had the usual crowds, but the theatre was alive and thriving and it was amazing to see everyone again. We also managed to successfully present even more exciting shows with our special events and Summer in September series which I am so happy to report will be coming back in 2022!

We have so many exciting things on the horizon and we cannot wait to share another season of exceptional music theatre together—especially from our new seats! That’s right, the floors are painted and the new chairs are being installed. We are working especially hard through the winter to make this happen and we just can’t wait to see you sitting in them next summer!

Now comes that time of year when we ask for your support once again for our Annual Fund. As many of you know, this end of the year push is what propels us through the spring and gets us to Opening Day. As things return to sort-of-normal, we now have to plan for the ever rising costs of almost everything, from lumber to printer ink. It is my mission to always keep Mac-Haydn financially accessible to everyone and without your help every year, this would not be possible.

A very happy patron stopped by the office last summer and said, “Wow! The Mac didn’t just come out of the pandemic, the Mac exploded out of the pandemic!” It meant the world to the entire staff to hear these remarks all summer long and it truly kept us going day in and day out. It has also inspired us to work even harder this winter to make 2022 the most spectacular season yet! Please have a safe and wonderful holiday season and we can’t wait to welcome you home for the summer again next year!

My Best Always,
John Saunders, Artistic Director

She Loves Me Returns to the Mac-Haydn
The Charming She Loves Me Returns To The Mac-Haydn Stage Beginning August 12.

The Mac-Haydn Theatre presents She Loves Me, the classic musical by Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick and Joe Masteroff, running August 12 through 22. Considered by many to be the most charming musical ever written, She Loves Me is a warm, romantic comedy with an endearing innocence and a touch of old-world elegance. Set in a 1930s European perfumery, two feuding shop clerks both respond to a “lonely hearts advertisement” in the newspaper. They now live for the love letters that they exchange, but the identity of their admirers remains unknown.

Alumna Kelly Gabrielle Murphy returns to the Mac-Haydn as soprano Amalia Balash, after touring with Fiddler on the Roof as Tzeitel nationally before the pandemic. Murphy returns following her fan-favorite performances at the Mac-Haydn as Sophie in Mamma Mia! (2018), Johanna in Sweeney Todd (2017), and Jolene in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (2017).

Newcomer Xander James makes his Mac-Haydn debut as Georg Nowack after a ten-year hiatus from live theatre. James currently works as a professional musician based in New York City, and his previous stage credits include Henry in Next to Normal, Chip in …Spelling Bee, and Jud in Oklahoma.

Rounding out the cast are returnees Erin Spears Ledford as Ilona Ritter, Andrew Burton Kelley as Steven Kodaly, Gabe Belyeu as Mr. Maraczek, William Taitel as Ladislav Sipos and Brian Wagner as Keller. Anthony Velez, continuing his debut season at the Mac-Haydn, is Arpad Laszlo.

Pippin Brings The Magic
J. Peter Bergman Praises Pippin in his review for The Berkshire Edge

“Nothing freshens old theater quite like a new generation making it their own without reference to the original. This production is the proof of that theory.”

Pippin Makes Mac-Haydn Debut
The Mac-Haydn Theatre kicks off our magical 2021 return season with the Stephen Schwartz musical, Pippin, opening July 29.

(CHATHAM, NY – July 23, 2021) There’s magic to do when a young man learns the true meaning of glory, love, and war in this iconic and unforgettable musical masterpiece. Presented for the first time ever on the Mac-Haydn stage, Pippin features numerous fan-favorite returning actors and debuts the summer theatre’s new stage extension.

We’re excited to welcome back Kylan Ross, in the title role, who was last seen in 2019 as Younger Brother (Ragtime) and Doody (Grease). Another returnee, Maya Cuevas, is the sweet yet complicated Catherine. We are thrilled to have her back for a second season in the Mac-Haydn acting company after her acclaimed performance as Sarah in our 2019 production of Ragtime. King Charlemagne is played by Columbia County’s own Mikel Hunter, stylist and art director and owner of a fine art and apparel gallery located in Hudson, NY. Mac-Haydn Reopens July 29

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Mac-Haydn Theatre returns with a determination to be a beacon for the community, once again bringing people together for a shared experience.

CHATHAM, NY – June 14, 2021 The Mac-Haydn Theatre will reopen its doors for live performances on July 29 after more than a year of closure, bringing the exciting summer theatre it’s known for back to Chatham, NY. Audience members and staff will be required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination. The theatre’s season will run July 29 through October 3 and include five musicals, as well as several limited performances. Tickets go on sale later in June.

As Mac-Haydn emerges into an entirely new environment for both theatre producers and theatre goers, managing director James Rodgers has no illusions about the difficulties ahead as people find their confidence to return to live theatre. “It is incredibly important that, above all else, a safe environment is created for our staff and patrons. We now feel that the time is right and that we can operate our space safely within the protocols outlined by the CDC.”

Because the season is starting later than usual, the team plans to keep the programming coming through the month of September with a new and exciting performance schedule. “Rep-tember,” consisting of two musicals and various limited performances, will be presented on a repertory schedule. Guest artists for limited performances include Broadway artist Elizabeth Ward Land, innovative ensemble Touch, award-winning Kurt Weill performer James Benjamin Rodgers, Mac-Haydn favorite Laura Helm, and the immeasurable combined talent of the 2021 artists roster for the Showstoppers revue.

The Mac-Haydn Theatre is known as one of the country’s few theatres in-the-round. To allow for more social distancing an entire section has been removed, transforming the dynamic space into something that audiences have never seen before. This will be unique for 2021 as the theatre anticipates returning to full capacity in 2022. “Even with the reconfigured stage, we have still managed to maintain the ‘in-the round’ feel we are famous for. I think our dedicated fans will be especially delighted to see the new space along with the fantastic fall line-up we have scheduled,” says producing artistic director John Saunders. “We have been waiting what feels like a lifetime to get back to what we do best, and I just can’t wait to see everyone back at The Mac!”

Financial and box office manager Dee Lashway, who has worked with the theatre since its earliest years, feels that the Mac-Haydn has never experienced anything like the last 18 months in its 51-year history. “I have been with the theatre every summer since 1970, and not having a season in 2020 was devastatingly sad for me but the support, good wishes, and ‘miss you’ comments from so many of our patrons touched my heart, gave me hope that all would be fine, and made all of us determined to keep moving forward.”

The Most Incredible Thing

Pleasant Valley Productions in collaboration with the Mac-Haydn Theatre are proud to present a developmental production of David Maglione’s newest musical work, The Most Incredible Thing on May 22 at 1pm and 4pm at the OSPAC in West Orange, New Jersey.

Tickets are free of charge. Donations to offset the cost of this production are greatly appreciated and can be made at any time during your visit at the theater. Parking is available across the street from the main gate. The gates open 45 minutes prior to showtime.

The piece is based on the Hans Christian Anderson short story of the same name. While the show is based on a work in the public domain, Maglione has set the adaptation in his original “Kingdom of Merideh,” a universe that serves as the setting for many of his children’s theater stories, including “Martin and Meelo,” last seen as part of the Mac-Haydn’s 2019 Children’s Theatre season. The Most Incredible Thing marks the second of what has been conceived as a five-part series.

Mac-Haydn Producing Artistic Director John Saunders directs and is joined by Mac-Haydn musical director Bruce De La Cruz (2019’s “Curtains”) and choreographer Amy Calzone.

The cast features Mac-Haydn alumni Kelly Gabrielle Murphy (Mamma Mia! and Sweeney Todd), Julie Galorenzo (Ragtime), Angel Harrison (2019 company), and Joe Christianson (2019 band). Rounding out the cast are David Rolando, Chris Frazier, Joseph Gottfried, Michael Gioia, Tyler Pearson, Susan Ramirez, Lawrence Dandridge, Lyle Dungee, Joelle Zazz, Danielle Pennisi, and Marcus McPherson.

Bruce De La Cruz, who is also responsible for original orchestrations, will be accompanied by a string trio: Violin played by Tristan Aniceto, Mac-Haydn alumna Lydia Paulos on Cello, and Magda Kress Double Bass.

The show will feature an original clock design by Andrew Gmoser, sound design by Brad Zuckerman, and costuming by Emily Spateholts and the Mac-Haydn Theatre. The show is stage managed by Emily Neimeyer.

Strict COVID-19 Protocol is in place to ensure safety at all events. Masks and physical distancing will be required.

A Message from Artistic Director John Saunders
Mac-Haydn Gives Thanks

A Message from Artistic Director John Saunders.

Dear Friends,

Above and beyond all, I hope this message finds you in good health both physically and spiritually. To say I missed seeing each and every one of you this past summer would be an understatement. I believe we all felt a void not being able to gather and celebrate live theatre together at the Mac.

In March, when this began, the team here at Mac-Haydn began aggressively doing everything we could to ensure our survival during this troubling time. From the establishment of our Bright Future Fund to our new digital content, we remained very busy all summer long bringing as much entertainment as we could muster to all of you. Behind those scenes we also took many crucial “unseen” steps to ensure our future. This included federal assistance, real estate planning, and a real tightening of our operating budget. In many ways, this crisis led us to discover new programs and maintain a strong financial footing after the last few successful seasons. Our goal is to take every action we can to make sure we are here to welcome you all back to the theatre when this pandemic is resolved.

Bright Future Fund Gets A Lift On Giving Tuesday
Board Member Pledges $10,000

Today is Giving Tuesday, a global generosity movement aimed at unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.

In solidarity with that mission, Mac-Haydn Theatre board member Meg Dooley and her husband Peter LaVigne have made a generous commitment of $10,000 to the Bright Future Fund, which they will give in monthly installments of $1,000 for the next 10 months.

Meg spoke about her motivations for giving: “For more than 25 years, the Mac-Haydn Theatre has been such an important and joyful part of our lives, it’s hard to imagine a summer in Chatham without it. But we will get through it – just this once! Peter and I are committed to doing everything we can to make sure the Mac-Haydn Theatre is back and stronger than ever in 2021.”
Meg and Peter’s commitment highlights the benefit of making a monthly donation both for the theatre and for the donor. “Knowing that this recurring gift will be coming in for the next 10 months is hugely beneficial in helping us determine our plans as we navigate through this crisis.” said Mac-Haydn managing director James Rodgers.

Meg also offered an especially unique incentive to others who follow her lead: “Join us in supporting the Bright Future Fund. In recognition of your generous gift, I promise that in a future season, I will return to the MHT stage for my FOURTH appearance as Mrs. Higgins in My Fair Lady – right, John Saunders???…”.

A huge thank you to Meg and Peter for their generous support!

Mac-Haydn Cancels 2020 Season
Postpones 2020 Season Lineup Until 2021

As time marches on during this crisis, it has become obvious that our only responsible decision is to cancel the 2020 season. This decision did not come lightly and has weighed heavily upon me since this crisis began. I am nothing if not an optimist, but I have realized that the most important thing is the health and safety of our audience, artists, volunteers, and staff. Second to that is my commitment to see the Mac-Haydn Theatre survive through this historical moment. Cancelling this season is the only way to see our incredible organization move forward into the summer of 2021.

Currently, the plan is to present this season’s line-up of shows in 2021. The buzz and excitement that was already building makes this an easy decision. The enthusiastic response from our audiences about the shows planned has been extraordinary and we will work tirelessly through this coming year to bring these shows to life when we reopen the theatre next spring.

So what happens next? I am thrilled to tell you that plans are underway for some exciting events that could potentially take place later this summer if we are able to gather together. We are also exploring several exciting virtual possibilities that can keep us connected both now and into the future. Rest assured, we will keep you posted every step of the way so you can still be a part of Mac-Haydn’s audience, or as so many like to call it… the Mac Family.

Many of you may not realize how significantly this crisis has impacted us. 85% of our annual budget comes directly from ticket sales generated through both subscriptions and individual sales throughout the summer. Needless to say, this puts the future of the theatre in very serious jeopardy.

Now, more-than-ever before in our history, we need your help. I know this is such a difficult time for so many of us and the uncertainty of what lies ahead is overwhelming to say the least. Your contributions to us at this time are so critical to our survival. More than anything, I want the Mac-Haydn to weather this difficult time so we can be here for you and your family and share in the joy that flows so heartily every summer.

If you have purchased tickets for the 2020 season, please go to our Postponement Ticket Information page to fill out a form letting us know how you would like us to handle your tickets.

I will miss seeing you all terribly this summer and pray that time flies by quickly. Please stay safe, healthy, and surrounded by love. We will be sure to stay in touch with each and every one of you as we work diligently to keep the Mac-Haydn moving towards a bolder and brighter future.

My best wishes,
John Saunders | Producing Artistic Director

Elizabeth Ward land – “As If We Never Said Goodbye” from Sunset Boulevard.

Who could forget Elizabeth Ward Land’s tour de force as the iconic Norma Desmond in 2019’s Sunset Boulevard? It was a triumphant show in many respects but nothing compared to her remarkable performance.

Just in case you did forget it, she has recreated one of the most famous moments from the show as only Liz could.

Emily Kron – “By The Sea” from Sweeney Todd.

In 2017 we presented an inspired production of Stephen Sondheim’s masterpiece Sweeney Todd.

Emily Kron was spellbinding and hilarious in the pivotal role of the grotesque and vicious Mrs. Lovett. Her portrayal gave us such empathy for this corrupted soul that we could not help but love her.

Here she gives us a glimpse of the amazing detail that she incorporated into that performance.

In this difficult time, sometimes you just need to have a good laugh. Here it is.

Friday, April 3rd

Kelly Gabrielle Murphy and David Maglione – “Wonderful Thought” from Wendy’s Shadow.

2018 saw the world premiere of this magical musical by our music supervisor David Maglione. A story of fear, hope and discovery, it moved audiences of all ages and set a new standard in our Children’s Theatre productions. Kelly was delightful in the title role and those who saw this performance will never forget it.

We see in this amazing performance from their family’s home just how joyous the act of making music together is.

Think wonderful thoughts everyone. And please stay safe.

Lauren Palmeri – “People” from Funny Girl.

Lauren performed Fanny Bryce with us in 2018 as part of our 50th Anniversary season to rave reviews from audiences and critics alike. J. Peter Bergman of The Berkshire Edge said of Lauren. “She embraces the uniqueness of the Fanny Brice persona… she is as good as it gets!”. We think you get a marvelous impression of that in this heartfelt rendition of the song, performed from her bedroom.

We Are Thinking Of You

Dear Mac-Haydn Family,

We wanted to reach out to let you know that our thoughts and best wishes are with you during this unprecedented time. We hope you are doing well and we wish we could do more right now to ease the emotional burden of life’s daily challenges, just as we strive to do each and every summer.

We are especially conscious of all our essential workers. This encompasses a wide range of fields from manufacturers to law enforcement, sanitation workers to retailers, safety service providers to our incredibly courageous medical professionals. We are eternally grateful for their hard work and sacrifice in protecting us, caring for us, feeding us, keeping our lights on and guiding us through this crisis. Without them we would be lost.

As events continue to unfold it becomes increasingly clear that the Mac-Haydn 2020 season will need to be altered in some way. Once those changes become clear, we will reach out to you. However, we believe that when this time of social distancing ends, and when it is safe for people to gather in large groups once again, it is our work that will become essential—providing the vital thread that will bring our community back together. It is because of that conviction that the Mac-Haydn team continues to examine what our 2020 season can be. This will depend on both what is financially possible, and what is safe.

We are immensely grateful to have a remarkable team of artists, technicians, administrators and volunteers, all of whom will answer the call when the time comes to get back to creating the vital experience of live theatre.

For now we must support the essential workers of today by staying at home and remaining safe. When their work is done, ours will begin.

On behalf of the Mac-Haydn Board and team, stay safe and be kind to one another.

Mac-Haydn Evaluating 2020 Season Plans
John Saunders Addresses The Potential Impact Of COVID-19 On 2020 Season

I hope this message finds you in good health and good spirits. Here at Mac-Haydn we are following the unfolding events very carefully and taking our cues from the CDC and our state’s leaders.

Nothing is more social than live theatre. The experience at Mac-Haydn begins the minute we pull into the driveway. We see old friends, we hug, we laugh, we cry, and we dream together as we share this incredible live event day in and day out.

We are determined to keep Mac-Haydn going through this uncertain time, to bring together the incredibly talented performers, designers, musicians, technicians, and volunteers that make Mac-Haydn the magical place it is today. We are also determined to see our incredible audiences return to the theatre this summer. And more than anything, we are determined to maintain the one thing we need most right now—hope.

We are continuing to plan the upcoming season and hope to open our doors to all of our loyal subscribers and audience members. We are very lucky that we have the ability to modify our schedule as this crisis develops. What does that mean? Well, it means we could open as scheduled or with some adjustments. Regardless, we will be ready when the time comes. We will be updating you regularly so please stay connected to us on the website, Facebook and Instagram.

The Mac-Haydn Theatre has been a part of this community and the theatre community for more than 50 years and we will continue to be. With your help, patience, and hope we will get through this difficult time and be together again doing what we love the most very soon. Above all else, please stay safe and healthy.

My best,

John

Mac-Haydn Announces Children’s Theatre 2020
Children’s Theatre Season Announced

We are extremely excited to announce our 2020 Children’s Theatre season in which we take a new look at some legendary fairytales.

For the third time in as many years, Music Supervisor David Maglione has authored a remarkable take on the famous Hans Christian Anderson tale The Most Incredible Thing. The creator of Wendy’s Shadow and Martin and Meelo, Maglione’s new interpretation emphasises the core theme of that mystical search for the artistic spirit dormant inside each of us. Maglione’s enchanting music solidifies a remarkable narrative that will resonate with children and adults of all ages, making this one of the highlights of the summer musical season.

Our second show of 2020 also takes a fresh look at a timeless classic. A clever retelling of the Snow White legend, Snow White and The Prince is a romantic and funny adventure with all your beloved characters, plus a few more that we know you will grow to love.

Mac-Haydn to Broadway
Holiday Season on the Great White Way

by Amanda Calvin

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but also the busiest, especially for the Broadway theatre community.

While most of us are enjoying time off with our friends and family for the holidays, Broadway shows are entering their most strenuous weeks of the season. This means alternate scheduling, multiple two-show days per week and navigating the intense environment of Midtown Manhattan during the holidays. We asked Mac-Haydn alums Aneesa Folds (Freestyle Love Supreme), Eryn LeCroy (Phantom of the Opera), and Dan Macke (Dear Evan Hansen) how they handle the challenges that come with being on Broadway during the holiday season.

Eryn LeCroy in My Fair Lady

Eryn LeCroy in My Fair Lady

The most obvious change is the schedule. The holiday season creates a higher demand for tickets, prompting Broadway houses to add additional performances. “Typically Phantom Broadway is dark on Sundays” says Eryn LeCroy, “throughout the holiday season, however, our dark day is adjusted to accommodate the higher volume of ticket sales”. Last seen on the Mac-Haydn stage in 2016, most notably as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, Eryn is currently making her Broadway debut as Christine Daae in Phantom of the Opera. LeCroy explains “We have an added performance the week of Christmas, making that nine shows over the week instead of the usual eight”.

“It’s going to be a marathon getting to next week,” says Aneesa Folds, who is also making her Broadway debut in Freestyle Love Supreme, an improv-based hip-hop comedy show developed by collaborators Lin-Manuel Miranda, Thomas Kail and Anthony Veneziale. We’re sure you remember Aneesa from her highly-praised performances in Mac-Haydn’s productions of Sister Act (Deloris Van Cartier) and Chicago (Matron Mama Morton), to name a few.

Dan Macke, Mac-Haydn alumnus from the 2017 resident company, who you may remember as Bobby in Saturday Night Fever and Barnaby Tucker in Hello, Dolly!, is also making his Broadway debut as the Connor/Jared standby in Dear Evan Hansen. “Spending all that time at the theatre can be mentally exhausting,” says Dan, who credits “finding ways to be away from the theatre in between shows” as the best way to keep his energy up during the busy time of year. LeCroy reveals that “rest and smart eating habits in general are key to conserving energy and remaining healthy not just during the holiday season, but also throughout the year”. At Freestyle Love Supreme, Aneesa notes that “the audience and cast are super energetic,” helping her to keep her spirits up through multiple performances.

Aneesa Folds in Sister Act

Aneesa Folds in Sister Act

More time on stage, however, means less time for baking cookies and holiday shopping. Hearing about their busy performance schedules led to our next question: how the performers’ holiday traditions differ when they are on Broadway. “I definitely don’t go home as often,” says Dan, “the theatre community in NYC, thankfully, makes the holidays away from relatives a lot less lonely”. Eryn agrees, “I’m not able to travel out of town over the holidays to see extended family,” but Dan, Aneesa and Eryn are fortunate enough to spend part of Christmas Eve and Day with their immediate families this year. Aneesa adds “I’m lucky enough to be living in New York where my family is from, so I still am able to spend time with them”.

In addition to family traditions, the Broadway community has traditions of their own, both unique to each production and widespread over the entire district. The companies of Dear Evan Hansen, Freestyle Love Supreme, and Phantom of the Opera each hold a secret santa-type gift exchange, and Eryn tells us that Phantom hosts “a Christmas party for our company and family members of the company in the downstairs lobby of the Majestic”. If you’ve ever attended a show in New York around this time of year, you’ve seen the red buckets that appear after each performance. Eryn explains, “the Broadway community unites together leading into the holiday season to raise money and awareness for the non-profit organization Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS,” which is accomplished through curtain speeches, red bucket collections, and the recording of an annual album, Carols for a Cure, from which all proceeds go to BC/EFA.

Dan Macke in Hello Dolly

Dan Macke in Hello, Dolly!

Despite the crazy schedule, Aneesa, Dan and Eryn have taken the time to recognize what they’re grateful for this holiday season. For Aneesa, it’s her immediate family and friends. “I’m extra grateful for my Freestyle Love family and my first Christmas on Broadway. I feel surrounded by love and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”. “The holidays remind me to be thankful for family always,” says Dan, “and I’m so grateful to be a part of this DEH family for another holiday season”. Eryn tells us “I am so thankful for my supportive family, my incredible friends, and the opportunity to perform a dream role in a show and in a city that I love”.

Camelot Cast 2019

We are delighted to announce the cast for our first show of the season, Camelot.

Stepping into the role of King Arthur is Mac-Haydn favorite Gabe Belyeu, kicking off his tenth season in Chatham. Last summer, audiences enjoyed Gabe in Damn Yankees, Mamma Mia, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Annie. Some of Gabe’s career highlights include the National Tours of Showboat and Jesus Christ Superstar with Ted Neeley.

Madison Stratton returns to The Mac-Haydn as the beautiful and spirited Guenevere after her performance as Tonya in last season’s fan-favorite production of Mamma Mia. Madison’s New York theatre credits include Baby, A New Musical Off-Broadway and the National Tour of Ragtime.

Nick Miller makes his Mac-Haydn debut as Sir Lancelot. Nick was recently seen as Falstaff in Mixed Precipitation’s Merry Wives of Windsor, Plunkett in Utopia Opera’s Martha, and Judd in the Engeman Theatre’s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!, which he will reprise in Mac-Haydn’s production in August.

John Saunders directs this incredible Rodgers and Hammerstein classic to close out our season. He is joined by Music Director Jillian Zack who’s known well to Mac-Haydn audiences. Jillian can’t wait: “I’m very excited to bring this expansive score to the intimate space of the Mac-Haydn. Katie Johannigman joins us as choreographer for the first time this season as does Costume Designer Bethany Marx.

Little Shop of Horrors Creative Team 2019

We are heading to skid row with a dynamic team led by Erin Spears Ledford whose direction Mac-Haydn audiences will remember from the fantastically fun Wedding Singer last season. “Little Shop of Horrors has long been a favorite of mine as it pairs my love of both musical comedy and the horror genre. I couldn’t think of a better venue to put up this show than the Mac- Haydn stage!”

She is joined by David Maglione, who Music Directs his fifth and final main stage show of the season. No doubt David will have to work closely with Sound Designer Corbin White on this one who is excited to build the sound world of the plant: “Crafting the sound for the monster plant in Little Shop will be a rewarding challenge as it has to be very refined, but it’s sure to be a lot of fun!”

Lauren Monteleone Choreographs for us for the first time this season as does Emma Cummings in her capacity as Set Designer.

Kevin Gleason lights the show and Alison Zador designs costumes for her final production of the season.

Ragtime Creative Team 2019

It’s an epic, devastatingly touching adaptation of E.L. Doctorow’s novel and our creative team are extremely conscious of how poignant the message of Ragtime is right now. An award winning team leads the largest cast in the history of the Mac-Haydn Theatre.

The Berkshire Award winning combination of John Saunders and Sebastiani Romagnolo join forces again to put their stamp on this majestic show. Romagnolo is very aware of the powerful messages Ragtime represents: “The American Dream, different for each of us, is defined by our race, our class, our origins. Ragtime is a gorgeous revelation of that fact. It reminds us that the struggle for equality is never finished and that ultimately, it is our differences that make a stronger and better world. If ever there were a time for this tale, now is it!”

Saunders is excited to bring Ragtime to the Mac-Haydn family: “I can’t wait to work with this all-star team on this epic show. I have no doubt that it will be the show event of the summer.”

Jimm Halliday returns to Ragtime, having won the Helen Hayes Award for Best Costume Design for his Kennedy Center production of the work. David Maglione carries the conductors baton, creating the musical world of this incredible score which he knows will leave a lasting impact on all that hear it.

Andrew Gmoser designs both sets and lighting for the first time this season, having created the visually stunning production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame last season.

Sound Designer Corbin White, Props Designer Joshua Gallagher and Hair & Makeup Designer Matthew Oliver team up again to fill out the turn of the century world of Ragtime.

Grease Creative Team 2019

Grease is the word and we welcome back the immensely talented Sebastiani Romagnolo to rock us back into the iconic 1950s.

“So many people know the story of Grease, the teenage epic of love, longing, and identity. I’m very excited to dig into this classic and find a fresh voice in it for a modern audience. Get ready for explosive dancing, heart pounding action, and the guttural power that is the story of the American Teen.”

Romagnolo, who received the Berkshire Theatre Award for his Hello Dolly! choreography two seasons ago, also choreographs the production and is joined by David Maglione as music director for the second time this season. Alison Zador costume designs her second show of the season and Kevin Gleason combines with Andrew Gmoser once again to produce the set and lighting designs.

Sound Designer Corbin White, Props Designer Joshua Gallagher and Hair & Makeup Designer Matthew Oliver hit their stride for the fourth production of the season.

Sunset Boulevard Creative Team 2019

The master director of the Mac-Haydn takes on Lloyd Webber’s masterpiece and surrounds himself with an incredible team to carry off the task. The Sunset Boulevard team is all aces.

John Saunders has taken our productions in directions many could not have imagined over the past decade and this will be no exception. “It’s high time we had the ultimate diva Norma Desmond on our stage and this season it’s finally happening! I am thrilled to present Sunset Boulevard for the first time to the Mac-Haydn audience. With Andrew Lloyd Weber’s soaring and beautiful score, alongside this compelling story, I hope to make it a new favorite here.”

John is is joined by our incredibly inventive resident music supervisor David Maglione and we are excited to see how he presents one of music theatre’s most fascinating scores.

Curtains Creative Team 2019

Curtains is a brand new show for our audiences and we welcome a brand new director to lead the production.

Courtney Laine Self has directed and choreographed throughout the United States in both theatre and musicals. John Saunders said of Courtney: “We are really excited to have her here. Both our performers and our audiences are going to love her creative energy.”

Bruce De La Cruz leads the pit in this wonderful score. “I’m very excited to be returning to the Mac-Haydn this summer! Digging into this score over the past few weeks has been so much fun and I can’t wait to get started working on it with the always amazing talent at the Mac.”

Our costumes are designed by the legendary Jimm Halliday whose biography speaks for itself.

Andrew Gmoser lights the show and Erin Kiernan joins us for her 8th season as set designer. Theresa Alexander assits Courtney as associate choreographer.

Camelot Creative Team 2019

Camelot opens our 51st season and we have assembled an awesome Creative Team, some of whom you know, and some of whom you are yet to discover.

After starring as Quasimodo in last years epic production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mac-Haydn favorite James Rodgers moves back to the directors chair. He last directed for us in our 2014 production of Sondheim’s Putting It Together. He is joined by choreographer Elizabeth McGuire who has an extensive background in immersive and innovative theatre that includes her work with ToUch Performance Art, a company she foundered.

Artistic Director John Saunders is excited about what these two artists will bring to the round table: “With their collective understanding of classical art forms and desire to present them in innovative ways while remaining true to the spirit of the material, James and Lizzie are a perfect combination for us. We’re really excited to see a Camelot that is unlike any we have presented before.”

Rodgers couldn’t be happier: “John has put together a fabulous team for this. Camelot is such an iconic show but so many aspects of this story are frighteningly relevant today. Hope, love, belief and the pitfalls of those things playout in very powerful ways in the political world of Camelot.”

The wonderful David Maglione, who will be with us all season as Music Supervisor, leads the musical forces and Alison Zador returns to design the costumes. The dynamic duo of Kevin Gleason and Andrew Gmoser join forces again for the set and lighting designs.

Some new faces round things out with Sound Designer Corbin White, Props Designer Joshua Gallagher and Hair & Makeup Designer Matthew Oliver.

It promises to be an exciting opening to our Summer ’19 Season.

50 years on: A new beginning for the Mac-Haydn Theatre

Chatham, NY – April 2, 2019

The Mac-Haydn Theatre heads into its 51st season of summer theatre with new leadership and a revived commitment to the organization’s founding principles.

Producing Artistic Director John Saunders

Producing Artistic Director John Saunders

“We are very excited to continue building on our wonderful legacy,” says producing artistic director John Saunders. “What Lynne and Linda created here in Chatham is something very special. It was a dreadful blow when we lost Lynne last year.” Lynne Haydn, a co-founder of the theatre, died last year, leaving Saunders in the principal leadership role.

Saunders isn’t afraid to shed light on the challenges. “It is a huge responsibility, particularly given the circumstances. I was extremely close to Lynne, I mean, she was my mentor and dear friend. But, Lynne left me feeling very prepared and confident to move the organization into our next 50 years. Our board of directors, led by Paul Colarusso Jr., have been extremely supportive, and I am very excited about our future plans and prospects. We have an exciting staffing restructure in process and have brought in some excellent personnel for the Summer 2019 season. I know it is going to be one of our best.”

Jelani you recently had the opportunity to originate a role in a Broadway show! What about that experience differed from your expectations?

Bringing to life a character in the biggest animation hit of all time is no small task. I was never expecting it to be easy, but I could have never imagined the great number of challenges in trying to honor what people know and love about the character and blend it with my own identity as an artist. I was lucky that Kristoff and I meet in many places, but there were some that we didn’t. I had to rise to the occasion!

Originally appearing in the Lakeville Journal, “Euripides Meets the Bee Gees” is a review by CB Wismar. The original post can be found on TriCorner News’ Website
